About the Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings (BSG Awards venue in 2022)

Avoncroft Museum is home to over 30 different buildings and structures which have been rescued and re-built in rural Worcestershire. The museum was opened to the public in 1967 following the rescue and reconstruction of a medieval Town House from Bromsgrove town centre.

The rescued buildings range in date, from Worcester Cathederal’s 14th-century Guesten Hall roof, to a post-second world war prefab from Birmingham, covering over 700 years of Midlands history.

In 1967 Avoncroft Museum was opened to the public following the rescue and reconstruction of a medieval Town House from Bromsgrove town centre. Avoncroft’s priority is to retain historic buildings in their original location. Over five decades, Avoncroft Museum has continued to rescue structures where this had not been achievable. The Museum now displays and cares for over 30 historic buildings and structures.

All of Avoncroft’s buildings were threatened with demolition or neglect. In moving them to the Avoncroft Museum grounds, every effort has been made to retain as much of the original structure as possible.

Visiting Avoncroft (BSG Awards venue in 2022)

Avoncroft’s historic buildings are set in 19 acres of grounds. The medieval Town House, Tollhouse and 1940s Prefab all have domestic gardens planted and maintained in the appropriate fashion of their times. The new Nailer’s Cottage also has a garden, to represent the one which was attached to the Cottage in the 1930s.

Avoncroft has an apple and pear orchard stocked with heritage varieties of fruits used in the region to produce its specialty ciders and perry. There is a picturesque farm pond by the threshing barn that is a haven for wildlife – dragon and damsel flies, mallards and moorhens and a colony of great-crested newts which use its waters to spawn in the spring. A second wildlife pond has been created at the south end of the orchard.

Avoncroft Museum still rescues historic buildings when resources allow, and when all options for their retention on their existing site have been exhausted. Our buildings come from across the counties of the West Midlands – Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and from the urban conurbation of the West Midlands – Birmingham and the Black Country.

Getting to Avoncroft (BSG Awards venue in 2022)

Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings is located in Stoke Heath, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, B60 4JR. Tel: 01527 831363 / 831886

The Museum has ample free parking and an overflow parking area for use on busier days. Disabled parking bays are available close to the Museum entrance.
